HUB structure and organization

Promoted by the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, with the support of the Barcelona City Council, the Alzheimer HUB Barcelona is a strategic alliance that brings together the main reference institutions in Alzheimer's and dementia in Barcelona.

It is made up of seven founding entities: the Pasqual Maragall Foundation and its research center, the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center; the four leading public hospitals in Barcelona —Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Hospital del Mar, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron— with their respective biomedical research centers; and Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona, the other center specializing in clinical care and research in dementia in Barcelona.

The Alzheimer's HUB Barcelona has a structure of Agile and collaborative governance, designed to ensure strategic alignment, operational efficiency and active participation of all member institutions.

Governance is structured around two strategic bodies:

The Steering Committee (SC)

It is composed of the legal representative of each of the founding institutions. It is the body responsible for defining the HUB's overall strategy and long-term objectives, and for approving the strategic decisions and action priorities proposed by the Operational Committee. It also ensures the HUB's social leadership and guarantees transparency and institutional representation in its governance.

The Operational Committee (OC)

It is composed of two representatives with technical or scientific backgrounds appointed by each of the founding institutions, who also act as institutional points of contact for the coordination and monitoring of HUB activities. It is led by the Coordinator and the Alliance Manager, responsible for leading and managing meetings, promoting agreed-upon actions, and keeping the Steering Committee informed. The Coordinating Committee is the body responsible for coordinating and implementing the HUB's collaborative activities and projects (including symposia, scientific conferences, training activities, grants, and networking initiatives) in the member centers, as well as identifying new funding opportunities and proposing new lines of work and strategic initiatives. It also establishes operational priorities and the necessary budget for developing HUB activities, oversees their implementation, and ensures scientific leadership and the smooth operation of the network.

The operational functioning of the HUB is structured through two key figures

Image
  • The Alliance Manager, She is responsible for the overall coordination of the HUB, ensuring its operational functioning and facilitating communication between the Steering Committee and the Operational Committee, as well as with professionals from the various institutions. She also provides technical and logistical support to both committees and oversees the implementation of agreed-upon actions and decisions.
  • The Coordinator of the Operational Committee, This annual, rotating position among member institutions leads the CO meetings and plays a key role in defining priorities, actions, and joint initiatives. They work closely with the Alliance Manager to ensure that agreed decisions are implemented effectively and aligned with the HUB's strategic objectives.

Operational decisions are made unanimously by the Operations Committee, which meets quarterly, while strategic decisions require approval from the Steering Committee. This model ensures consensus-based, transparent decision-making aligned with the HUB's mission.
